There’s a vibrant new store shaking things up in the pleasantly sleepy town of Vicenza. In this enchanting town in northeastern Italy – which is most known for Andrea Palladio’s prolific contributions to Renaissance architecture – gliding along the cobblestones on a locally-made longboard is a relatively new phenomenon. Vicenza natives Chiara and Aldo opened the doors of AC Longboards in April this year, and the locals have welcomed it like a breath of fresh air.
With dreams of one day taking their kids to surf, skate and snowboard in far-flung corners of the globe, these irresistibly cool parents decided to carve out their own creative oasis here in the meantime.
I was keen to learn more about this lively duo, who met and fell in love in their hometown, tied the knot 13 years ago, and have been perfecting their craft together (Aldo makes the boards; Chiara paints them) from the beginning.
Now that they are a family of four avid skaters, surfers and snowboarders, Aldo and Chiara know the importance of having a board that lasts – especially if you wish to brave the cobblestones of Vicenza! They use quality materials that will cost you a little more than the big brands, but in the words of their maker, these boards are indestructible and built to last a lifetime. Chiara makes the final touches, and if you’re not already smitten with one of her original pieces (featuring a hammerhead shark or a UFO abducting a cow) she can paint your custom-made board with a design of your choice.
Read on for a little Q&A with this creative pair, and a look inside their vibrant Vicenza store – complete with an upstairs painting nook and skateboard shelves.
